5 Tips for a Positive Birth Experience

From the moment your wonderful news is out in the public domain, people will be queuing up to offer you unsolicited advice about pregnancy, giving birth and parenting. If this is your first baby, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed and as the months pass, you may start to feel fearful about the prospect of giving birth.

1. Choose your Healthcare Provider Carefully

Women have a huge amount of choice these days. They can opt for a low-key birth at home or a high-tech birth in hospital, but whatever birthing environment you choose, make sure you pick the right healthcare provider. Trust is very important and if you don’t feel respected or listened to, your baby’s birth will not be a positive birth experience, so look for a healthcare provider you can trust.

2. Choose the Right Birthing Environment

A natural birth is usually the birth plan of choice for most women, but sometimes Mother Nature has different ideas and that choice is taken away from us. But until this happens, you are free to opt for the birthing environment that best suits your needs. And if you are uncomfortable with your birth environment, make sure you have the right support team in place to ensure your needs are met.

3. Hire a Doula

Every woman needs support when she gives birth. You will almost certainly want your partner, relative or a close friend by your side, but having a doula present can drastically improve your chances of having a positive birth. A doula will provide encouragement, act as a buffer between you and the medical team, and offer practical and emotional support to your birth partner. A doula will stay with you throughout the birth and offer support once baby arrives.

4. Deal with Fears and Anxieties

A sense of fear and trepidation about the birth process is only natural. For many women, it is the fear of the unknown that causes unnecessary anxiety, but knowledge is power and the more well-informed you are about the birthing process and what your options are, the more relaxed you will be when the time comes.

5. Eat a Healthy Diet and Stay Active

The healthier you are when you go into labour, the easier it will be for your body to get back into shape (it can even make labour easier). Try and eat a healthy diet and stay as active as possible throughout your pregnancy. A healthy diet can help prevent any last minute health issues and staying active helps keep a positive mindset.
There is no such thing as the perfect birth, but if you feel supported and nurtured, you can look forward to having a positive birth.
