Doula Services: What I do as your Doula
This is how I can support you as your Labour & Birth Doula
As your Doula it is my aim to help ensure a satisfying and positive birth experience for you, your partner and your baby. A large part of my Doula services is that I will support you during your pregnancy, labour and birth in the choices you make and will draw on my knowledge and experience to provide emotional support and physical comfort.
I will provide reassurance and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions to help labour progress, and help with relaxation, massage, positioning, and other techniques for comfort. I am independent and self-employed and will be working with you, not your care provider or hospital and I guarantee complete confidentiality of all details relating to your pregnancy and birth.
The presence of a doula lifts the sole responsibility of the labour off the shoulders of your birth companion, allowing him/her to enjoy the whole birth experience. I can help your birth companion to feel calm and informed, giving him/her ideas to continue support from beginning to end. At no time will I “take over” or deliberately exclude your birth companion. I am there to provide support to both of you at all times.
How It Works…
Once you have decided to retain my Doula services, please advise me via email (Doula@TrishCummingHypnoBirthing.com.au) or phone (0413 647 109). At this point we will organise a mutually suitable time to meet at which time, we will complete all the necessary paperwork (complete intake form, sign contract etc) I will also advise you of how you can make an initial payment of the Doula fee (this is 25% of the full fee).
We will then arrange two meetings, at mutually agreeable times. One of these visits will be in your home. It will be helpful if both you and your partner or other birth companion can be present at these meetings, so we can consider how we might best work together and exactly what you and your birth companion want and expect from me as your Doula. We will discuss all manner of things, but primarily we will be focusing on getting to know each other. I would like to hear about how you envisage your birth, what your likes and dislikes may be, also about your priorities, fears &/or concerns. We will also discuss the practicalities of labour & birth, your birth preferences, talking to your care providers and when to call me in labour etc. I can provide information on options for your birth preferences. However, you will be responsible for deciding on your birth preferences and for discussing the terms with your care provider. I will also answer any questions you may have. Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy we may organise for me to attend a prenatal appointment with your care provider.
I will be on call for you 24 hours a day beginning at 38 weeks (or earlier by negotiation) of pregnancy up until labour begins. This means that I will carry my mobile phone with me at all times, and will not leave town without advising you unless it is an emergency.
I will be available to you and your partner to answer questions and/or provide emotional support over the phone or via email any time before labour begins.
After the birth I will make one or two postpartum visits, which can be arranged at a mutually agreeable time.
Please notify me at the first signs of labour, or if you think you might be in labour (or aren’t sure) even if you do not need me yet, so that I can make arrangements to attend your birth. At this point we would decide whether to meet at your home or at your chosen birthplace. Please allow me approx 1-2 hours to reach you from the time you have informed me that you require my prescence. I will provide support over the phone until you decide you would like me to be with you in person. If for any reason you are unable to contact me once labour has begun, please leave a message for me and then contact your back up Doula. Please ensure you have spoken with me verbally, or received a confirmation from me, that I am aware that you are in labour.
It is up to you or your partner to determine when you will leave for the birthing facility.
I will provide early labour support as requested, including in your home.
I will remain with you once labour has begun and stay with you for one to two hours after your baby is born (and not until you are settled and happy for me to leave). I may take short breaks for meals and rest if time allows – this will be discussed with you at the time and I will not leave you if it is inappropriate.
I may utilise non-medical support techniques for labour and birth. I will also remind you if there is a departure from your birth preferences.
I will strive to maintain a calm and peaceful birth environment and support you to the best of my ability.
I am happy to assist with any photos or video as and when requested by you & your partner/birth companion.
I will remain with you for up to 1-2 hours after your baby is born or until your family is comfortable and ready for quiet time. During this time I can also take photos of your new family if you wish.
I will visit you within the first week if possible, after the birth of your baby either at the birth place or at your home to see how you are doing, review the birth and to maybe sneak in a cuddle of your new baby. I will be available by phone or email during this post partum period for any emotional support you may need or questions you may have. If a situation arises that I cannot offer you assistance with I will give you a referral to the appropriate person/professional that can meet your needs.
I would strongly encourage you to complete a birth plan of your preferences and discuss this in detail with the medical practitioner/s scheduled to attend your birth.
If you are having a hospital birth/birth centre then please ensure you schedule a time to tour your birth facility.
I would encourage you to explore your emotions during pregnancy and if you feel there are any issues that may effect your labour that you deal with these in adequate time (I can offer you guidance in this area if necessary).
