HypnoBirthing Story: The Birth of Evie Joelle
This is the HypnoBirthing Story of Lisa Fincaryk and her daughter Evie Joelle.
One of the greatest things I learned from this Birth experience is the power of the mind. Not only in regards to easy birthing but also in regards to the actual start of labour.
My Beautiful baby girl Evie Joelle Fincaryk was born gently and easily at home in my Korean sized bathtub on November the 8th at 2:40am. I had been experiencing practice labour for about three weeks prior to her birth. The labour surges during that time were quite powerful on and off, but I enjoyed every one of them as it afforded me the opportunity to practice my breathing and relaxation techniques. I could feel my body preparing for her birth and while I was excited to meet her I was not mentally ready for her to come. I had booked several client appointments in the weeks prior to her birth as well as I was in the middle of teaching a HypnoBirthing course. I kept telling baby Evie that it was not time yet and to please wait a little longer.
The last week of October Evie engaged and her weight was heavy on my pelvis. At that point I felt ready. I was sure that if I tried to induce labour she would probably come. My husband however had a very big presentation at work that week and ask me to please hold on off on trying to have her come. (Essentially he avoided me like the plague all week).
I woke up early on Friday morning with regular surges and I thought to myself, this is it. It was the end of my husbands work week and I was mentally and physically ready to have our baby. I enjoyed the day walking around the city and I met my friend for lunch. When my husband came home I was still having regular mild surges. We tried nipple stimulation to induce labour and granted my surges increased greatly, but as soon as I lied down to rest they stopped completely. I had been teaching my HypnoBirthing classes on Saturdays from 3pm to 5:30pm and I know that the class had been weighing on my mind.
Saturday morning I woke up without surges. I decided to prep for my class and continue on with my day. I experienced mild irregular surges throughout the day and was quite tired, but other than that I felt great. My class was wonderfully relaxing and I enjoyed teaching it. We ended a little late and after clean up, almost instantaneously, my surges picked up regularly again.
I figured that baby Evie would probably come sometime Sunday so I put my 2 and a half year old son, Evan, to bed, cleaned the house, and baked banana muffins while my husband went out for a few beers with a friend. When he came home I had him assist me once again in inducing labour. My surges seemed to pick up strength but they were still painless. I decided to take a bath to relax.
At 12:00am I got into the bath tub and my membranes released. I was a little surprised that my membranes would release so early in labour but I was encouraged that this was it and I would be meeting my little girl soon. I got out of the tub to refill it and to prepare Evie’s things. At 12:30 I called my doula and my midwife; I told them that my membranes had released but they should take their time because I suspected that I was still in early labour. My midwife asked my how frequent my surges were and how long they were lasting but I hadn’t been keeping track. I asked my husband to time several of them for me, and was shocked when I realized they were every 2 to 3 minutes lasting over 60 seconds. I was so comfortable I hadn’t really noticed.
I decided to return to the tub and relax with candle light and Nora Jones. Annette my doula, arrived at 1:30, we were able to talk and enjoy each others company between surges. It wasn’t long after her arrival though that I felt my body’s urge to bear down my baby. This threw me off guard because in my mind there was know way I could be this advanced in labour. For the first time I felt a little scared and noticed the power of my surges.
It took me a couple of surges to refocus but I was able to direct my birthing energy by Mmmmmming (a vocalization technique that I have used with many birthing women). Aware that my body was bearing down I curiously felt inside to see if I could feel her head and again to my surprise, Evie’s head was low in the birth path. Rosa, My midwife showed up at 2:15 pm. She was shocked when I told her that I could feel the head.
She told me that Evie would probably be born within the next 5 surges. Annette kept me relaxed through light touch massage on my face and neck and Mmmmm’d with me through each powerful surge. The sound was comforting and seemed to make the whole room vibrate. Rosa controlled the birth of the head but I experienced a little tearing as Evie’s head emerged. That was the only time I truly experienced pain during the labour. After that, while we waited for the next surge to come I was able to feel my daughters head, her hair, and discuss what was happening with Rosa my midwife. With the next surge her body emerged. At 2:40am, Beautiful Evie was placed directly on my chest bright eyed, calm and alert. 3.8kg, 51cm Long A week later she is eating well, sleeping 4- 5 hours a night and growing exponentially. She is beautiful calm and doesn’t cry or fuss. She is truly an angel baby. I knew that my birthing would be easy, but I never expected it to be THAT easy. I am also convinced that my body would not go into labour the week before because of the responsibilities which weighed on my mind. Once those responsibilities were taken care of, my body did the rest and I was able to birth easily, comfortable, gently and quickly. It was an amazing experience more than I hoped for or expected. Thanks to a wonderful husband and support team.
